How to create content in lockdown; Catherine O’Hara shot by drone for @VanityFair
Catherine O’Hara vs. drone. Pick your fighter: 📸@aspictures. May 21, 2020
Here’s Catherine O’Hara as you’ve never seen her before: photographed by drone! For our June issue, the Schitt’s Creek star dishes on her early friendship with Gilda Radner, flubbed auditions, and the curative power of gratitude. Read the full story at the link in bio. 📸@aspictures May 21, 2020

The first email from Vanity Fair arrived in the middle of Week 3 of the meltdown. I mean, shutdown. "Would I photograph Catherine O’Hara?" Yes! "With a drone?" Wait. What? With a drone? Why? "Because using the drone means guaranteed social distancing and we want to highlight alternative ways of doing portraiture during these unprecedented / unparalleled / unfortunate / uncommon / unusual times.” You had me at “O’Hara.” And these crazy times call for….a very, very, very, very small crew. How small? A Party of 5! Me. Drone Pilot. Drone Camera Operator. Wardrobe Stylist. And a Prop Stylist who doubled as a Photo Assistant. That’s it. And now…the rest of the timeline. I came up with a creative brief best summed up as “All dressed up and nowhere to go.” Then a ZOOM call with @cmarinai from the magazine, wardrobe stylist @rebeccarams, COH and her team (@meganzehmer from 42West and @whitneyjam from Brillstein Entertainment Partners). Then a scout of O’Hara’s backyard with drone pilot @j_howiee from @dronedudes to see if there was enough room to fly the drone and...to find the shots themselves! We found a goldmine of yard tools on the property (including the leaf blower) so the only thing we had to bring was the basket of lemons! Then another ZOOM call to firm up the details and pair the wardrobe with each set up! Easy! We aimed for an afternoon shoot after I had mapped the sun and figured out when we'd get the best light. Each of the six set ups (with five wardrobe changes) was covered by drone stills, drone video, Canon stills (just in case) GoPro BTS and Canon BTS. Why? Exactly. As the drone hovered, I stood off to one side watching a live feed on a video monitor and yelling direction at COH over the hum of the drone. @photobuffalo watched the props and manned the Matthews Matthboard (what we used to call a Polito board). At the risk of droning on and on…HUGE HUGE HUGE thank you to drone camera operator @tayla_gang_ @justinschaefersdir @marinai @photobuffalo @dronedudes @_tara_johnson @kirapollock and @radhikajones. But most of all, a thousand thank yous to #catherineohara for being such a fantastic subject. @vanityfair @schittscreek May 22, 2020
